An Excerpt From "Bits And Pieces"

Her eyelids flitted soft and rapidly. The world was swirling around her, in a madman's kind of dance. Down she went, in a heap of limbs and clothing. Everything faded, and she was asleep. It was a strange sleep, peaceful yes, but still she remained conscious of her own thoughts and presence. She heard a whisper, and a soft, soothing feeling came over her. A new variety of thoughts and color and value arrived-- carried on the wings of a dream. A new place surrounded her, which she gladly became a part of. A daffodil sprang up happily before her on a bed of soft, spring grass. The sky was powdery blue with drifting clouds. A sense of happiness reverberated from this land. Distant voices, singing hymns, floated over the dotted green hills. The light scent of wildflowers perfumed the air. She rose to her feet and followed the singing. Along the way she passed a sweet-looking meadow where a family of deer was grazing. Stepping lightly, she crossed a crystal-blue brook that trickled between the low hills she was now exploring. Once across and past a lovely green drapery of grape vines and honeysuckle, she found herself in a clearing. Where was the music coming from? she wondered. The singing was louder than ever, and the voices were definitely here, but she couldn't see their owners. Stepping forward and busy with this thought, she didn't notice the odd coloring and formations of this patch of grass.
"Screeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!"
Thousands of purplish-blue worms came shooting up through the earth, wrapping themselves around her legs and planting her to the ground. More followed up the length of her body, binding her arms to her sides and squeezing the breath from her. Up and around her they slithered; tiny hooked mouths gaping and sinking into her skin as soon as they met it, where more only continued their journey, cutting a path for themselves beneath her flesh, until they came to her head. The scream that tore out of her mouth was cut short as a new army of these worms dived into her mouth, latching onto her tongue and gums, choking her. They plunged down her throat, attacking her with continuous pain as they made their way throughout her insides. Now the girl was no longer visible. The worms had completely devoured her, inside and out, and began to unwind and recoil from the living, twisting mass. Downwards they sank, with frightening speed, till not one was left and they had all disappeared below the earth. Immediately, the rich, beautiful voices heard from across the land resumed their blissful song. The grass grew back over all traces of the place of their arrival, and somewhere, a bluebird started chirping a merry tune.
